Although hookahs have been around for hundreds of years,
mainstream acceptance of hookahs in the US is just starting
to happen. Hookahs in the US were mainly seen at some Middle
Eastern restaurants until about 4 years ago when they
started to make their presence in hookah lounges. In 1998,
The Velvet Hookah’s owner, Ehab Elsaadi brought a couple of
hookahs back from Egypt and was amazed at the acceptance
amongst friends who tried the hookah. The interesting thing
was that conversation around the hookah tended to get deeper
and more philosophical as friends sat around and breezed
past typical superficial conversations about the weather and
sports. It was as if the hookah brought friends closer
together. |
